The wool from Romneys is characterized by its distinctive crimp, lock structure, handle and luster. It can be spun alone or blended with other fibers. We shear every eight to twelve months to avoid excessive length that would result in matting and cotting. Available colors include white, oatmeal, various silver grays and black.

We take the extra care to ensure that our fleeces remain clean. Careful management practice, blanketing and heavy skirting result in fleeces that are virtually free of vegetable matter and other contaminants. Handspinners and crafters are often repeat buyers of Pitchfork fleeces. Our typical price is $7-$10 per pound on raw fleece. Photos cannot capture the extraordinary appeal of these fleeces. If the fleece from a certain animal appeals to you, it can be reserved prior to shearing, and we will go to extra lengths to maintain its cleanliness and quality. References from past customers are readily supplied to prospective buyers. Besides raw fleeces, we also have both white and natural colored Romney pelts, tanned washable, which range in price from $100 to $150. We have also have available a limited amount of roving, yarn and handwoven rugs. |
