Llama fiber generally falls into two categories: double fleeced, which is composed of a soft, fine undercoat protected by longer, coarser guard hair, and single fleeced, which is a silky, fine fleece with little or no guard hair. The long, hollow guard hairs of the double fleeces tend to coarsen the resulting yarn, but also serve to increase its durability, making it ideal for rugs, socks and outerwear. Single fleeced fiber (both pictures above) is softer and finer. It can be blended with other fibers, such as wool, silk or mohair, or it can be spun on its own--either way, it can be worn next to the skin. Unlike sheep wool, llama fiber has no lanolin. Since the fiber can be cleaned before being removed from the animal, it can be spun immediately after shearing, with minimal preparation. Without the added weight of grease or contaminants, clean llama fiber is still an excellent value, in spite of its higher price. |
| Our llamas are sheared of their prime fiber (the blanket
area) once a year, and sheared overall every two to three years as needed.
We have a wide variety of colors in both double and single fleeces, including
white, black, silver-gray, red and various shades of brown. We make a
practice of brushing and blowing out most contaminants before shearing
and skirting the fleeces heavily afterwards, so that what is left is prime. Photos
cannot show all the attributes of this fiber. We will readily send fiber
samples upon request at no charge. Our llama fleeces are generally
priced at between eight and twenty dollars
per pound, with the finer single fleeces at the higher
end.
Because of the exceptional care we take to insure that our llama fleeces are healthy, clean and free of mats, we have numerous repeat buyers. References available on request. |
